Archbishop Vlazny has announced that September 26, 2007, will be an Archdiocesan Ember Day. Traditionally, Ember Days are days of prayer and fasting at home, in schools, at church, in private. The intention of this Ember Day is for the healing of victims of child abuse and their reconciliation with the Church and community. To fast means to eat one full meal; the other two meals that day should be less than the normal amount unless they are already at a minimum for good health. Eating between meals is not permitted; however, liquids including coffee, milk and fruit juices are allowed. Observance of the Ember Day is encouraged but not obligatory.
I will be away on vacation (Yellowstone National Park) this week.

September 17: Feast of St. Robert Bellarmine
St. Robert Bellarmine (1542-1621) was said by Pope Clement VIII to have no equal for learning and on that basis made him cardinal in 1598.
His book Disputations on the Controversies of the Christian Faith Against the Heretics of This Age became the bedrock for the Catholic response to the Reformation. St. Robert Bellarmine was known for his fairness in his treatment of the controversies evening defending the reformers from unjust interpretations of their thoughts. While he was a champion of the papacy he nonetheless held that the pope' s power was primarily spiritual, not temporal. He wrote two catechisms that remained popular for several centuries, inspiring the more recent Baltimore Catechism. While a cardinal, St. Robert Bellarmine lived a life of simplicity, limiting household expenses to the essentials, subsisted primarily on bread and garlic, and use the tapestries hanging on his walls for clothing for the poor. The walls won' t catch cold. he said.
