December 7: St. Ambrose (c.340-397)

St. Ambrose was the governor of the province of Emilia-Liguria, which he ruled from Milan. The Arian heresy divided the church at Milan as elsewhere. On the death of city´s Arian bishop, Ambrose went to the church—where both Arian and Catholic believers had gathered—to exhort the crowd to remain peaceful. To his surprise, both sides took up the chant, “Ambrose, bishop.” Though he was still a catechumen and unbaptized, the emperor ordered the well loved but reluctant Ambrose to take up the post. He was baptized and a week later consecrated bishop on Dec. 7, 374. He immediately gave everything he owned to the poor and devoted himself to theological study and pastoral work. He himself prepared catechumens for baptism, and it is said that when he heard confessions, he wept with the penitent. He cleansed his diocese of the Arian heresy even when his stand brought him into conflict with the authorities. He preached regularly and effectively and kept open hours at this house during which anyone could come and speak to him. He wrote numerous moral, and dogmatic works as well as sermons, letters, and hymns. He was “a faithful leader of the church,” Augustine said, “even at peril of life itself.”
